Tribal Status

Our tribal nation is acknowledge by the State of New Jersey through both concurrent legislative resolution (S.C.R. 1982 No. 73) and through the state statute that formed the New Jersey Commission on American Indian Affairs (N.J.P.L. 1995 c.295, codified as N.J.S. 52:16A-53 et. seq.), which established permanent seats on the commission for representatives from our tribe.

The 2008 New Jersey Executive Order 122 also acknowledged our tribe and was aimed at starting to correct the long history of mistreatment of our tribal community.

In both the 2000 and 2010 United State Census, the Nanticoke-Lenape were acknowledged as separate American Indian Tribal  Statistical Area, and worked with the federal government in establishing specific census information for our tribe.

We are a voting member nation of the National Congress of American Indians, the oldest and largest political organization of American Indian Tribes in the United States.
